Studio Brief 2: Selftea - Final Presentation

The presentation went well, as a group we divided the slides between us to talk about. I talked about the social media, as thats what I led. We had the poster files separate but showed them while we presented.

Feedback:

  • Try and mix selfteas with varieties of teas to make it more focused, tea of the month?
  • How is it making non-tea drinkers drink tea?
Hopefully it made people want to drink tea, or they made a cup of tea just for the purpose of a selftea (like I did numerous times - so it did work on me, I don't normally drink tea often). However, this is a good point, because it is mostly current tea drinkers who participated. But that doesn't have to be a negative thing; the goal was "drink more tea" which doesn't have to be about converting non-tea drinkers.
  • People have to make a cup of tea to make a selftea so it does make people drink more tea
  • Try to collaborate with tearooms

Studio Brief 2: Selftea - Did it go viral?

Overall we accumulated over 164 followers by using Instagram and Twitter. A whopping 100 #Selfteas have been taken (and counting), and the total reach is 20k, which was calculated by adding the amount of followers up of people who took selfteas etc.

These figures are still going up but will definitely decrease in how fast this happens, as we have ended the project now.

Did it go viral?
I'd say so yes, over 100 Selfteas within 5 days is impressive, as well as our other figures. Tea is definitely in people's minds a lot more now than it was before, and hopefully they are drinking more tea.
If we could do the project again, I would have made sure we started working on everything earlier, especially the posters which only went up on the thursday of our final week. However, this project is something that can be extended so it isn't too bad. I would also have maybe created some sort of competition, or try even harder to get in touch with celebrities or companies that could have helped us gain exposure.

Studio Brief 2: The journey of the Selftea project

Twitter - http://twitter.com/theselftea
Instagram - http://twitter.com/theselftea

Joe created this logo for Selftea, which is a camera combined with a cup of tea to signify taking a selfie with a cuppa. We want to use this as are logo so we are recognised straight away.

Rebecca created a Twitter account and Instagram account for Selftea over the weekend, which I have acquired the login details for. 'Selftea' on its own is not available on either social networks, so we added a 'The' on the front which I think actually works well.
I made our Twitter icon the Selftea icon to create an identity, and added a bio.

I have been following lots of tea-related Twitter accounts, and also people I follow on my personal account to try to reach as many people as possible. As seen above, a lot of tea related accounts have followed back and also followed our Twitter page off their own back out of interest.

I have tweeted photographs of our posters, to create some content other than asking people to take selfteas. By tweeting regularly, it reminds people that we are still existing and ongoing, and reminds them of selfteas or even just tea, which will remind them to DRINK tea which is our goal.

Here are some more tweets I have done to get people's attention.

I tried to get the attention of Yorkshire Tea on Twitter, because they are quite successful at making people take selfies with tea.

I thought maybe by stating that I am drinking Yorkshire Tea I would get a retweet, which would reach an audience of tea lovers. Unfortunately we did not get any response.
I have also tried to do this with popular tea Twitters by asking them to share our page etc, but has not worked. Occasionally it has gained us followers, however.

Me and some others in the group posted about the Selftea project on our Facebook pages, which got some attention. I did this by taking a humorous selftea myself.

Instagram

As a group we have been trying quite hard to get a large amount of selfteas, by asking friends etc. However I took this further by using the Instagram account to our advantage. I searched 'tea' on the hashtag page and 'liked' a lot of the posts so people who our interested in tea would see our account.

I then targeted some of the photographs under this hashtag that were essentially 'selfteas': the photos were the person with their tea.

These screenshots above show people who have actually complied and thought the hashtag selftea was interesting. I was quite successful with these comments, and some people followed our Instagram.

Above shows photos on the #selftea hashtag page, where you can easily see how many are accumulating, and this is how we've kept track of how many selfteas we've been getting.

I made a couple of short videos on the selftea instagram (above) just to post some content and encourage people to drink tea.

Promotion

We got a shout out from a tea Instagram with 26k followers who found us by chance, thanks to my exposure across the app of Instagram.

This is a second promotion we got, this time on Twitter by an advertising company with 700 followers. I didn't ask anybody to do this so it surprised me - my friend works for it so she must have wanted to help out.

Studio Brief 2: Final Posters

These are our three designed posters for our viral project, Selftea. We decided to incorporate health benefits to add another feature; they are facts that will encourage people to drink tea for their health. It is another incentive that is part of our project to get people to drink more tea.
Joe designed most of the second and third posters, and me, Alec and Rebecca worked on the first and edited little parts of the second and third.
We then printed them in the digital print room, and stuck them on the doors of the studio. We chose these places because they are always seen when people are entering or leaving the studio, people can't miss them. We are hoping they will remind people of #selftea, or just tea in general.
We wanted to incorporate an informal, youthful feel with the imagery, and also the social side of having cups of tea.

Studio Brief 2: Drink more tea pitch - Presentation

Below is the presentation we put together for pitching our two different ideas for the viral project.
I wrote the information for 'Intended impact' and 'How we will measure our success', with others in the group doing separate parts. We then brought our information together in the morning before the presentation and got it organised ready for showing.

I'm happy with how the presentation went, as both ideas are quite developed in concept and planning, instead of just one strong idea. That defeats the point of having two ideas to pitch.
After presenting, we got a small amount of feedback, we were asked:

  • What is the age range?
We answered this by saying that it would be a big range, as almost every age consumes tea. from teenagers upwards. But realistically, it would have to be pointed at young people because of our strong use of social media, and also if we set up things inside the college.

  • Where will you acquire so much tea?
We will buy big bags of fairly cheap tea to keep it realistic. We can't afford high end tea. But yes, this could prove to be a problem if one of the ideas really took off and we want to give away free tea.

  • Could you combine the ideas?
We were possibly thinking of doing that, but we are limited with the time we have so we thought keeping it straightforward would make the whole project work more smoothly.

All but 3 people voted for the Selftea idea over the Varieteas idea, because of how clever the pun is and how it appeals to a wide range of young people because of the popular trend of selfies. We will be carrying it forward and working on it from now on until next friday.

Studio Brief 2: Communication within our group

These are some screenshots from our group chat on Facebook.
I feel that the communication within our group could have been better. Some people in the group didn't get involved much and didn't do much work, even when we made a time to show up in college and work. This could have been improved if we had a strong time plan or clear jobs for everybody. Near the end of the project we made it clear who was going to do what as we were under pressure and we worked well like this, but even then there were people missing who hadn't got in contact with the rest of the group which impacted the project.
I think it was good experience working with people I wouldn't usually work with, as it makes me learn how to organise things and how to communicate with people.
