Women in Film // Research: Feminist posters

UN Women

The UN Women foundation created posters to show the discrimination that still exists against women. In order to do this they found real google search suggestions that show popular searches.

The searches show that people are searching for quite extreme, sexist phrases, such as "women shouldn't have rights".

The placement of the search results over the women's mouths in the imagery is powerful. It signifies women being silenced and oppressed by these extreme and cruel beliefs.

It also effectively shows what people might be thinking but won't admit to; people will use google for content such as this but not ever admit to believing it.
The population's darkest thoughts are exposed.

The use of women with different ethnicities is positively inclusive and diverse, which signifies that it happens to women from ALL walks of life. Often feminism can be led by white, middle class women and neglecting of women from other backgrounds.

Support the Survivors

The message of this poster is a strong one, but there seems to be too much going on in terms of colour etc. The message seems too serious for the way in which it is displayed visually.

Feminist Facade

This is a good example of a lighthearted approach to a feminist statement, which is instantly effective as using people's real faces highlights that ANYONE can be a feminist and care about women's rights - to help people understand that it is not a certain, stigmatized way.
The message is a little illegible because of the rips and the different coloured letters, but with a closer look it can be read. the overlayed images are what make you look closer.
