- striking
- imaginative concept
- original interpretation
- strong use of typography
- appeal to a contemporary readership
- stand out from competitors
- reflect the themes and layers
I read the novel so that I could get a proper feel for what it is about.
Themes within the book:
- religion
- forbidden sexuality
- adventure and escape
- fantasy
- adoption
- mythic
- gender roles
- pink raincoat
- youth
- obsession
- poverty
Connotations I got from it:
- suppression
- oppression
- maturing
- identity
- escape
- breaking free
Initial ideas
- mixed fruit - to signify 'oranges ARE NOT the only fruit'
- an orange segment in the middle of a blank page, or an opened orange with all the segments separate
- a long and winding path - to show the journey from being a girl to being a woman, and finding herself and where she belongs
- a religous cross that is shattered or crumbling or fading away
(across)
- page full of crosses with one cross upside down - rebellion against religion.
- path leading down the page - adventure and growth.
- two faces facing eachother - forbidden relationship.
- -
- assorted fruit except oranges - very literal interpretation of the title.
- single orange segment - showing that oranges are not right for everyone.
- -
- watching eyes - religious people judging the main character.
- eyes open and then closing while being stared at - the main character at first worrying about being judged, then finding peace.
- -
Out of these sketches and initial ideas, I want to incorporate both eyes and a path into my design. The other ideas are very obvious and something lots of other contestants will probably do.
