D&AD Shutterstock // Development: Comedy animation

The main focus of the animation was the phone, which stayed in the same spot on the screen to solidify the main focal point of the story. At first I decided to have it not move at all and use the same image throughout, but I found useful tools when selecting the vector meaning I could slant it sideways to make it seem like it was turning, creating angles and dimensions to the animation.

Initially this storyboard consisted of a busy city background and buildings, but after some sketching and drawing together we came to the conclusion that it would be much more straightforward to use a background that is unfocused and more of a natural landscape. We found this out by trying to plan out exactly how we would illustrate zooming out of a city into space: this would be a challenge considering we were beginners at animation.

As we went along, I found that certain elements needed to be removed, such as the character wanting to take a selfie with the moon - a humorous element but it seemed difficult to fit into the timeframe.

The punchline of the comedic plot was the breaking of the selfie stick at the end, which I made happen gradually through shifting piece of the line around.
